- Only imagine, this place was a highly developed civilization yet in 1640 B.C., before the erruption of the volcano that changed the climate on the whole planet (there are evidances). Knowing this you will especially appreciate the prehistorical streets you are walking on, 3 storey buildings, almost same as now, inside waterpipe system and even a built-in toilet inside the house! 1640 B.C.! Get a guide to learn every known detail and to understand the meaning of things located on the place. There are even prehistoric beds in here - if you can figure them out (usually only with the help of the guide). It is the best preserved prehistorical town in Europe that keeps many mysteries inside. Before or after visit the Prehistoric Museum in Fira to complete the idea. Appreciate a visit to Akrotiri as it has been staying closed for 7 years and who knows for how long it will be open yet...

- It was a really cool place because it gave you an understanding of how life was back 7000 years ago. The other element that is amazing was how well preserved some of the elements were. There were complete vases, etc. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that having a guide was probably good to get a better understanding of what you were looking at. We hung around some other larger groups that had a guide and heard a few stories about the artifacts and it was certainly nice to hear what it was about. Should get a guide.

- Definitely it's the most significant site of Santorini - not to say in the whole Cyclades. It will look ruins to you when you first enter there and reading several not sufficient explanation signs will not help to understand anything. The place is unique! And even just a possibility to step on this place is incredible change to get into history of the humanity that deep. It is a unique culture but your only chance to breathe the air of prehistoric times is TO GET A GUIDE. You may just walk around but you won't learn a thing. Only getting a guide or someone local who knows what's going on here can open your eyes on the civilization very close to ours but...3600 years ago! Books will help to learn the story, not to understand what is where though. And you take a risk to visit the site and to miss everything. Do not expect too much - it has a lot to offer you, but with a proper explanation. Keep in mind that the erruption in 17th century B.C. and the volcanic ash actually saved it for us to step on this ground. And appreciate it.

- First time I visited Akrotiri was in 1994 and later on few more times in the next few years. Being a physical anthropologist I always managed to discover some new things which caught my attention. Even though I was visiting Santorini every year ever since, I was very sad to hear that the site was closed for many years. But it was worth waiting for the reopenning of this world famous place. The experience of my recent few visit was breathtaking. The place is a must to visit, and not only for experts, but also for generat public. I highly recommend this place, it should not be missed.

- Like most of Greece site, the place is more interesting if you know the story, the history and stuff. This is the ancient settlement of santorini / thira in a quite well reserved condition (some are reconstructed) - but visit the museum first so that you got a better view and history about what actually going on in this place. True that you'll have an audio guided tour but the museum has a more detailed graphics about what the place was, beyond the brick and stone. I probably should rate this site more, but after a few archeological site in greece - you'll get a bit bored.

- The Site is a very interesting site to see. A must see actually. First as an architect i must say was impressed with the structure they have built to protect the archaeological site. Found it to be very elegant and suitable for the area. It's a nice walk, we took a guide with us to explain. You actually can see very old elements and objects, whether from daily use like pots, beds and chairs to early structural elements and way of building. Very interesting indeed and iconic.Loaded with history!

- We visited the archaeological site of Akrotiri during the off-season and we were surprised that there were absolutely no other visitors, although we stayed there for about an hour! The construction that has been made on the site in order to protect the antiquities is obviously impressive. However, having watched several documentaries about "Akrotiri" we expected that more places would be accessible to the public (some corridors were closed without any kind of information). However, our biggest disappointment was that the few explanatory signs at this very important archaeological site are written in a language that is difficult to understand, neither in greek or english, since 1 out of 2 words is archaeological terminology! A child would probably understand nothing at all! It is a pity because we have recently visited the Museum of Acropolis in Athens where the explanatory signs were significantly more comprehensible. A good aspect is that the place can be easily accessed by persons who use a wheelchair. The surroundings of the site are really nice and I guess that it would look even better in the summer! The toilettes could have been more environmental friendly (As soon as I got into the restroom, 25 lights were automatically turned on! Not really ecological!)

- If you like archeology and history, this is your place. One of the most ancient cities found in Greece, and I guess in Europe, the city was abandoned due to volcano eruption, and left a full picture of what life was more than 4000 years ago. Amazing place to see how developed that culture was.Easy to get, if you rent a car there is a parking space. Tiny museum shop, toilets and a small cafeteria in the place.
